Dragon Dance by Microgaming
Dragon Dance is a companion release to Bikini Party and our first thought when checking it out was that it makes it two months in a row where Microgaming has opted for an Oriental theme. January’s Lucky Twins was perhaps a little uninspired although the twins themselves seem to have grown up quickly, as one of the symbols on this game looks like older versions of the stars of that show! The overall experience looks passable, especially compared to Bikini Party but that turns out to be a good thing as it turns out that both slots are identical in gameplay. With just a theme to set the two apart, we’d definitely suggest this one over its beach based counterpart just because it looks a whole lot better! Anyway, let’s get on with the features and gameplay.
Wilds, Scatters and All Pays
We already know what to expect from the game given that we’ve essentially seen it before, but there’s no harm in picking up on some of the better elements of the game. The playing card icons and even themed symbols are rather mundane, but they’re helped along by the Dragon Dance logo which acts as a wild. It can fill in for any other symbol except the scatter and can be particularly helpful with 243 ways to win.
Reel Respins
The only truly outstanding element of the gameplay is the inclusion of reel respins. It is not seen all that often, other than on Bikini Party of course and some older slots, but essentially allows players to pay a fee to respin a single reel rather than the entire board. The goal is to improve the board state to bring a new win into play, or even improve an existing one. The catch is that the more likely a new win is, the more the game will charge for the respin. It’s certainly a balancing act and the biggest skill possible when playing this game is to quickly be able to calculate whether a respin is worthwhile!
Free Spins on Dragon Dance
A firecracker symbol serves as the scatter and if you manage to land three or more in view at the same time, fifteen free spins will be awarded. These spins are subject to a three times multiplier at all times, and another batch of three or more scatters on a free spin will continue to award more free games at the same rate.
We commented in the Bikini Party review that it feels like Microgaming has hit a bit of a creative lull in recent times, something that becomes rather humorous when we then went on to see that the second of their new releases for the month was a clone of the first. That said, Dragon Dance fixes the main problem that we had with Bikini Party, that being the visuals, and so it can definitely be worthy of consideration.
