Hugo by Play’n Go

We have to admit that until this game came along, we had never actually heard of Hugo before but as it turns out he was already a television star long before this game became available. As it turns out, the character of Hugo was created in 1990 by a Danish television company and has gone on to appear in all sorts of animated shows – all of which have clearly passed us by. Nevertheless, we don’t get to see much by way of branded action here in the Play’n Go range, so it serves as the ideal opportunity to see whether the developer pulls out all the stops like most developers do when they get their hands on a famous property.

There are no surprises when it comes to the gameplay as Play’n Go has elected to stick with the tried and tested ten win lines that have previously found success on games like Book of Dead. Considering that some developers make games with ten lines that feel a little slow, the theme and gameplay come together here to ensure that things are still highly exciting. Hugo himself is the wild card and he clearly enjoys a bit of mining, with gold nuggets, a pickaxe and dynamite being among the themed symbols on the game – all handily backed up by the trusty playing card icons that we know and ‘love’.

The Hugo Bonus

Hugo is clearly an important part of his own game by serving as the wild card alone, but he also has his own bonus round to contend with too. Landing a treasure chest symbol on reels one, three and five will trigger it and players will then be looking to make their way through a mine, picking up more treasures as they go. When you discover a chest, the prize inside is yours and you can keep on digging, but when you encounter Don Croco, Hugo’s arch nemesis, the round ends and it is back to the base game.

Hugo’s Free Spins

We’re not entirely sure who Scylla is outside of being human and female, but we will never tire of seeing her as landing three or more at the same time will launch the free spins round. Before the spins play out, players will need to take their pick of three different options. They could go with five free spins and a scatter that pays out three times the stake when it lands, or ten spins with a two times multiplier on the scatter. Finally, you can go with the option that we like most as we will take spins over scatters any day and pick up fifteen free games, with every scatter that lands during them awarding your stake as a prize. In fairness, it can be worth going with the scatter boosts as Hugo becomes an additional stacked scatter, so you can land plenty of them on the same spin, and you can pick up however many spins you chose in the first place once again by landing three more Scylla symbols at once.

Hugo is one of Play’n Go’s best received games of the year so far and in playing it you will soon see why. It has all of the visual qualities that players will associate with the developer and backs it up with a great themed round and a solid selection of free spin bonuses. You can see how that all comes together by playing for yourself here on the page, or check out any of our recommended Play’n Go partner casinos to set about playing Hugo for real cash prizes!
